chiaroscuro
bats
Objective
Students will be able to create value, a key element of art, by using white colored pencils on black paper in creating bats (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, rendering)
Grading Requirements
· The composition must be complete
· The artist displays a strong understanding of value changes
(each section is shaded with the proper value)
· The lines are drawn neatly and with precision
· The artwork has a strong likeness to the original
· The artist worked to the best of his/her ability
Basic/Few Details – Symmetrical – Small Paper – Low C Range
Basic/Few Details – Asymmetrical – Small Paper – High C Range
Detailed – Symmetrical – Small Paper – High B Range
Detailed – Asymmetrical – Small Paper - Low A Range
Detailed – Symmetrical – Large Paper – High A Range
Detailed – Asymmetrical – Large Paper – Very High A Range
Vocabulary
· asymmetry. A form of balance in which two halves or sides of a design are not identical (the same) but still appear to have equal visual weight
· symmetry. A form of balance in which two halves or sides of a design are identical (the same)
· texture. The surface quality of materials, either actual (tactile) or implied (visual). It is one of the elements of art.
· chiaroscuro. The use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.
· render. A shading technique used create an accurate (correct/exact) reproduction
· value. An element of art that deals with the darkness or lightness of a hue or neutral color (highlights and shadows). A value scale shows the range of values from black to white.
· hatching. A technique of shading using a serious of fine parallel lines.
· highlight. Small white areas in a drawing or painting that show the surfaces of the subject that reflect the most light. (The opposite of shadows)
· shadow. Shaded areas in a drawing or painting that show the surfaces of the subject that reflect the least light. (The opposite of highlights)
Projects
Project 1 Steps - Sketched Bat
1. Draw the contour of a bat on a ½ sheet of paper
a. Draw large and do not trace
b. Bats can be symmetrical or asymmetrical
c. Use hatching, crosshatching, stippling and/or rendering to create value on your bats (very neat and clean – marks are intentional)
d. Bats are creative and unique! Mix and match features

2. Complete a five step value scale on a black strip of paper
a. This will be completed on a black strip of paper (1in by 5in)
b. Students will use their rulers to measure and mark their papers every 1 inch
a. They will do this on the top and the bottom of the strip
a. Connect the dots to create straight lines
Project 3 Steps - Chiaroscuro Bat
3. Create a bat on black paper using white colored pencils
