Objective - Students will display their understanding of the elements of art by visually defining the elements of art on their "Elements of Art" cube.
Grading Requirements
· The project must be complete
· Each square must represent a single element of art
· Each element must be creatively demonstrated (be original)
· The artist displays strong craftsmanship (the project is neat)
· The artist worked to the best of his/her ability
The Elements of Art
Line. An element of art that is a continuous mark made on a surface with a pointed, moving tool. Although lines can vary in appearance (they have different lengths, widths, textures, directions, and degree of curve), they are considered one dimensional and are measured by length. A line is also considered the path of a dot through space and is used by an artist to control the viewer's eye movement. There are also five kinds of lines: vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved, zigzag.
Shape. Element of art that is two-dimensional and encloses space. While a form has depth, a shape has only length and width. Shapes are either geometric or free form
Form. Element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses space. Like a shape, a form has length and width, but it also has depth. Forms are either geometric or free form.
Texture. Element of art that refers to how things feel or how they look like they might feel on the surface. Texture is perceived by touch and sight. Objects can have rough or smooth textures and matte or shiny surfaces.
Space. Element of art referring to the emptiness or area between, around, above, below, or within objects. Shapes and forms are defined by space around and within them.
Value. Element of art that deals with darkness or lightness. Value depends on how much light a surface reflects. Value is also one of the three properties of color.
Color. Element of art deriving form reflecting light. The sensation of color is aroused in the brain by response of the eyes to different wave lengths of light. Color has three properties: hue, value, intensity
