Vocabulary
Horizon line – The imaginary line at which the earth and sky appear to meet (Imagine standing on the beach and looking out toward the ocean. Where the water meets the sky is our horizon line.)
Vanishing point – The point on the horizon line where receding parallel lines appear to meet (Imagine a long hallway. The further the doors in the hallway are from us, the smaller they look. If that hallway was so long we couldn't see the end, the walls, ceiling, floor, and doors would look so small that they would vanish in one small point. That is our vanishing point.)
Perspective – A method used to create the illusion of depth on a two dimensional surface
Dimension - The amount of space an object takes up in one direction
Space – This element refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece
Foreground – The part of the picture plane that appears to be the closest to the viewer
Middleground – The area in a picture that appears to be between the foreground and background
Background - The part of the picture plane that appears to be the farthest from the viewer
Vertical – Lines that run from top to bottom
Horizontal – Lines that run from right to left
Parallel - Lines that are the same distance apart and run in the same direction
Project Steps
1. Fold the paper in half to create a horizon line (landscape/hotdog style)
2. Measure the half-way point of the horizon line (3.75 inches) to give us our vanishing point. Mark it with a tiny dot
3. Place your drawing paper over the block letter templates and trace the shape of the letters onto your paper.
a. Write your first name about an inch above the horizon line
b. Write your last name about an inch below the horizon line
4. Make a dot on each corner of every letter
5. Connect the dots by drawing a straight line from every corner of each letter to the vanishing point
