Welcome
to a new school year, I am excited to
work with you. This course is designed to provide introductory exposure to the
disciplines of elementary drawing technique. We will be working with a variety
of visual elements such as, line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color.
We will be working on a series of exercises and projects to further your
understanding and application of these basic drawing skills. Projects in this
class will range from graphite pencil drawing to
painting.
Expectations
- You
are expected to attend class on time every day. You are expected to be prepared
to begin as soon as the bell rings. As you enter class, check the board
for the daily agenda and follow any instructions that may be presented to you. I
respect your time and I want to give you the maximum amount of time to finish
your work in class while I am available to you. Every
student is required to participate in the day-to-day activities. Bringing the
necessary materials to class, and participation in class are all part of the
grade.
Classroom
Behavior
– This class will provide
a safe and positive environment for everyone. Please be respectful of the school
policies as they will be enforced in this class. Each
student is expected to show proper classroom behavior. It is important to show
courtesy to others in the class and studio setting. Inappropriate behavior will
not be tolerated. The first offense will be given a warning. Subsequent
incidents will be dealt with according to the severity of the incident. Phone
calls home, detentions, and classroom suspensions are all possible consequences
for poor behavior.
Necessary
Material -
Please bring a
pencil to class, as one will not be provided for you. Graphite pencils are the
basis for all projects in this class (non-mechanical). It is recommended that
you purchase the suggested material for this class. Art supplies have varying
degrees of quality, supplies do not have to be expensive to be good. If you have
any questions about art supplies please feel free to ask. Any supplies you
purchase for your work will be beneficial to you.
Reference
Photos
- Students will be required to bring in picture references for the completion of
many of the projects in this class. If students cannot bring in a reference
photo they must tell me before the image is required, as I will assist in
getting a photo. We are working on elevating artistic skills to the highest
realistic level. Cartoon imagery is not always the best source for this. We will
be looking to increase our realistic drawing skills, and cartoons often do not
fall into this category. There are several projects we do, that cartoon imagery
will be acceptable for.
Assignments
- Each project is designed as in class work and students are given plenty of
time to complete these in class. Working outside of class is sometimes necessary
but it does not take the place of creating work
inside the classroom. Due dates are important, and it is expected that students
will turn in work when it is due. There may be a time when a student requires
more time to finish assignments that are ambitious. Students are given adequate
time frames in which to be completed in class. Each project is graded on a 5
point scale
5 = Strong work, 4 = Good work, 3 = Moderate work, 2 = Weak work, 1 = Poor work
“But
I can't draw....” - It
is understood that students enter this class with various skill levels. You will
be graded on the effort put into increasing your individualskill level,
not in comparison to the initial skill level of your peers. Participation is the
core of your grade. Students who put forth effort and turn in completed work
will be successful in this class.
