Dia De los muertos
Sugar skull
Objective - Sugar Skull Drawing
Students will relate visual arts to historical and cultural practices by designing a sugar skull in honor of the day of the dead.
Grading Requirements - Sugar Skull Drawing
· The composition must be complete
· The artwork appears to be balanced
· The lines are drawn neatly and with precision
· The artwork is creative and original
· The artist worked to the best of his/her ability
Vocabulary - Sugar Skull Drawing
· Balance - A principle of design that that deals with arranging visual elements in an art work equally
· Visual Weight - As opposed to actual weight, the apparent "heaviness" or "lightness" of a shape or form
· Symmetry - A form of balance in which two halves or sides of a design are identical (the same)
· Asymmetry - A form of balance in which two halves or sides of a design are not identical (the same) but still appear to have equal visual weight
· Value - An element of art that deals with the darkness or lightness of something (highlights and shadows)
Project Steps - Sugar Skull Drawing
1. Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half, hot-dog style.
2. Create a light contour drawing of half of a sugar skull on one side of the paper. Make sure that your outline runs to the middle fold (This is so it will connect to the other side when we transfer it).
3. Once you have finished your contour design, trace over your lines and make them very dark, creating a thick layer of graphite. Once you do this it will be difficult to erase, be certain about your design first.
4. Fold the paper so your design is on the inside facing the other blank half of the face.
5. Using a ruler, or a similar object, place pressure on your paper, pushing the excess graphite onto the other side of the paper. This should create a very light "ghost" contour on the other side of the paper, connecting the lines of the image and creating one complete sugar skull.
6. Trace over your "ghost" contour to make it as dark as the other side
7. Using the light box, trace a clean copy of your sugar skull onto another sheet of paper for a total of two copies of these skulls
8. One copy must be shaded just using pencil while the other one will be colored
