Objective
Students will be able to use line and value to create a symmetrically balanced pattern that demonstrates repetitive rhythm and overall unity.
Grading Requirements
· The artwork must be neat with minimal errors
· The artwork follows the format for accurate repetition
· The overall design is complex
· The artwork appears to be evenly colored, displaying a good range of value (3+ colors, tints and shades)
· The artist worked to the best of his/her ability
Vocabulary
· balance. A principle of design that that deals with arranging visual elements in an art work equally . The three types of balance are symmetry, asymmetry, and radial.
· symmetry. A form of balance in which two halves or sides of a design are identical (the same)
· asymmetry. A form of balance in which two halves or sides of a design are not identical (the same) but still appear to have equal visual weight
· radial balance. A form of balance in which elements branch out from a central point, in a circular pattern
· rhythm. A principle of design that intentionally repeats lines and shapes to create the illusion of movement
· pattern. A predictable combination of lines and shapes that are repeated in a rhythmic manner
· repetition – A technique for creating rhythm and unity in which a single element appears again and again
· unity. A principle of design that allows the viewer to see a combination of elements, principles, and media as a whole. This is achieved by the careful blending of the elements of art and the principles of design.
Project 1 Steps - Creating a Flipgrid Puzzle Piece
1. Create a single shape on the 2in by 2in card - This will be our template
a. Create an organic shape that runs off all four sides of the paper
b. Shade in the negative space, this will reveal your white template
c. Cut out the shape, creating a template to trace
Grading Requirements - Mandala
· The artist took care in his/her craftsmanship
· The design is complex and runs from edge to edge
· The artist used at least 3+ colors in an appealing manor
· The colors are blended well and display various tints and shades (value)
· The artist worked to the best of his/her ability
